Odile Soudant
Odile Soudant is a visual artist and designer who lives and works in Paris. She experiments with our relationship to light, manipulates its qualities, and explores its variations in order to recreate it in multiple forms where reflection, materials, and the limits of perception meet. Her installations take various forms like monumental or intimate, permanent or ephemeral, sculptures, paintings, unique pieces, with constant attention to the subtlety of chromatic shifts, to what light reveals rather than what it illuminates.
Her practice takes light as a material, not simply as a condition of visibility, but as an active substance capable of shaping space, altering perception, and producing thresholds. She experiments with our relationship to light, both natural and artificial, by manipulating intensities, reflections, and materials, working at the very limit of the visible, where apparition merges with imprint.
Her works, often conceived site-specifically, deploy devices that transform the immaterial into an environment. Light circulates through surfaces, reflective planes, and materials, replaying a phenomenology of sight: what we think we see, what eludes us, what persists. This attention to the how of vision, rather than the why, crystallizes particularly in her works such as LuxAeterna, designed for darkness. The experience begins with dazzlement, then shifts behind the eyelids, into those afterimages, those retinal impressions that become memory, form, trace. Her artistic research is part of a trajectory that brings creation and lighting design into dialogue.
Lumières Studio
Founded in 2009, Lumières Studio is a lighting design studio dedicated to architectural, urban, event-based, and artistic projects, while continuing the development of Odile Soudant’s personal works. Drawing on experience from Ateliers Jean Nouvel, where Odile Soudant led the lighting department, Lumières Studio develops projects from conception to realization, at different scales, for both public and private contexts.
Lumières Studio is conceived as both a production workshop and an experimentation laboratory. The studio is positioned at the intersection of architecture and art, with a clear direction: to make light an operator of perception, a spatial factor, an atmospheric regime, rather than a simple lighting device. The studio is explicitly dedicated, on one hand, to the production of Odile Soudant’s creations, and on the other, to the lighting design of architectural, urban, event-based, and artistic projects.
Lumières Studio is characterized by an original method that consists of guiding projects from concept to implementation with a comprehensive approach. This principle of continuity, from concept to realization, engages both the sensory quality of the result such as thresholds, intensities, reflections, rhythms and the ability to respond to complex technical requirements and coordinate all stakeholders on a project.
The studio works on varied programs at very different scales: public and private projects, permanent commissions and temporary installations, scenographies, performances, exhibition spaces, public spaces, hotels, and cultural facilities. The team is multidisciplinary with architects, designers, engineers, and artists and an oversight from design through execution.
